(B PLUS.)īELFAST-Kenneth Branagh's best film in decades is also his most personal: a heartfelt, autobiographical coming-of-age drama about growing up in late 1960's Belfast amidst Northern Ireland's "Troubles." Branagh surrogate Buddy (newcomer Jude Hill in a remarkable screen debut) is broken-hearted when his parents (Jamie Dornan and Catriana Balfer, both wonderful) decide to uproot their family and move to England. The always-welcome Jesse Plemons' brings much-needed gravitas to a film that might have simply been too Guignol-ish for its own good. His sheriff provides the moral fulcrum for a stylish and delectably spooky thriller that deserves to become a future cult favorite.
